The Whitewater High School Players are still full of the Dickens during their winter presentation, “Inspecting Carol.”

Performances of this comedy of errors will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday in the Whitewater High School Auditorium.

Playwright Daniel Sullivan, the Tony Award-winning Broadway director, has plenty of experience with “A Christmas Carol” and “The Nutcracker,” cash cows of arts organizations, that are often the only money makers of a season.

In this play, the struggling Soapbox Theater, a barely professional company struggling is staging its own time-worn production of the winter classic in an attempt to stay afloat.

“Of course we’re broke! We’re an arts organization!” proclaims one of the actors.

Adding to the stress is news of a last-minute visit from an inspector from the National Endowment for the Arts, which holds the key to the company’s future.

So, during the final days of disastrous rehearsals, a not-so-talented wannabe actor shows up for an audition, but instead is mistaken for the NEA evaluator. A raucous case of mistaken identity and chaos ensue as the group is forced to put on a thoroughly unprepared performance.
